The final debate has ended and most pollsters have concluded that should the election occur today, Senator Barak Obama has the votes in the Electoral College to become the 44th President of the United States. The American people have seen a distinct difference between the candidates and in less than three weeks voters will make their selection.

 

For me, as well as most African-Americans, we are “holding our breath” to see what will ultimately happen. In observing the general climate of Black America in their support for Barak Obama, there has been almost an “across-the-board” restraint in doing anything or saying anything that could be misconstrued or used against Obama’s selection. It’s almost uncanny, as if there is a “plantation signal,” that Blacks don’t do anything to be used as a cause for the rest of America to say, “See, he shouldn’t become the president.” Have you noticed that Reverend Jeremiah Wright has not been seen or heard from for months? Well, that’s been purposeful! (If we can only get someone to cause Jesse Jackson to keep his mouth shut, and go somewhere & sit down!)

 

In “holding our breath,” I mean Black America is waiting to see what the election results will be. In seeing the majority white crowds at rallys becoming more and more angry, having been incited by Sarah Palin, there has been the thought that Congressman John Lewis has verbalized, suggesting are we seeing a resurrection of a post-civil rights era. But through it all, African-Americans have stayed cool. We are “holding our breath.” We are waiting to see what happens.

 

So on Tuesday, November 3rd, when the votes have been counted and the winner is announced, Black America will either “exhale” in victory or as a volcano “blow” in eruption that something sinister has occurred. If Obama wins, with relief we can join a triumphant celebration. But, should Obama lose with any appearance of racism or wrong-doing (such as the Gore issue in the Florida election of 2000) you’ll see anger with rioting as never before. How about you? Are you holding your breath with me?

"Waiting to Exhale" or "Blow-up-tuate" (Jaime Foxx's word). As I forestated my assignment has been to prostrate at the Father's feet and hear the heartbeat of the heavenlies regarding this election. Today, however, I received a different assignment ~ "go to the Ohio State Capital building in Columbus and intercede that this pivotal state, which has been declared as one that could "sway this election" would fully align with MY intention for America." As my children and I walked up the stairs leading to the House of Representatives' Gallery, I heard the Lord say clearly, "wherever the soles of your feet tread I will give it to you as an inheritance." I thought, Lord that's a wonderful Word, but what does this have to do with my assignment to come here & pray about the election? He said, "My Word gives direction to your intercession. Your children are not here by accident. Pray for and/or against anything that would encroach against the inheritance I promised to give you." I thought - oh shoot, this election is about my inheritance, my children's future is at stake here (A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children)...and that put everything in perspective for me. It took my focus off Obama & McCain and onto the next generation and how the results of this election would affect them. And so I prayed. I rest my case & my vote on my 10 year old son who spoke a powerful prophetic word about Obama as he signed George Washington Williams' guest book. He said, "Wow, an African-American man who ran for President has his own room in the Ohio State Capital; he didn't win then, but I guess that's just a sign that now another African-American man running for President can have his own room in the White House." I'm clearly "Waiting to Exhale".

Praise the Lord Pastor Lundy, and congratulation for being the first person to comment on this subject.I also enjoy reading your posts. Well for me, I didn't watched the debate lastnight. I was too scare to watch it due to increasing hatred and fear tactics used. I know I needed to sleep well and be able to concentrate on my job. So I didn't watch....But from what I read so far on Sen Obama's website is that he has won the last and final debate, especially from uncommitted voters, and is even gaining favor in red states. That's is good to know, but we must be careful not to assume he won the election, but to continue to pray for him, and to help him as much as possible in these final days. Only on election day will we know for certain. LOOKING GOOD >GO

I agree with many of the statements mentioned. If something is done to unfairly steal the election, without doubt rioting will take place. Not only is America waiting, but the entire world is watching. Remember we police the world when it comes to human rights. Other countries are watching to see if we can live up to what we preach. For example when a country fails to fall in line with our view of righteousness we levy sanctions against them to persuade them to do the right thing. Working in a predominant white workplace, I can’t but overhear the debates daily. Obama is classified as a socialist, hater of America, inexperienced boy, talking head, good talker with no substance etc. And on the other hand many have expressed that they do not want Palin as a vice-pres and are going to vote for Obama for that reason alone. As I expressed to my white colleagues… he is half white. He’s yall cousin as well. To assassinate him as some have talked about would not be good for America. God is going to have his way, I love America and would not want to live anywhere else for an extended amount of time, but we are no different from Rome or any other nation who ruled. We are fallible. I pray that we debate and fight thru our differences but in the end come together address the real issues we facing.

Unfortunately it is a distinct possibility that if Obama does not win there will be negative consequences. The RNC and McCain-Palin is on their most negative Karl Rove attacks. Those negative attacks by Rpublicans has worked in the past. Will it work this time? For the sake of the country let's hope not. The next 2 wks. will be really in the RNC gutter. The pundits are questioning whether the Bradly effect will affect this election. If the primaries are an indication it should'nt. That is why I am praying that the last part of my prophecy is as accurate as the first.

I think their has been no better support statement than Colin Powell's statement today on "Face the Nation". If their is another articulate political figure in Washington (that can be trusted and and shows exceptional leadership) that is at Barrack's level, it is Powell. The right endorsements helps, no matter the color. The wrong ones hurt (we have a Catholic Priest, Father Flaeger, in Chicago who is white and is very vocal on politics) no matter denomination. Powell's endorsement has given him the "Experience" card. It appears that Palin is now hurting McCain's campaign more among white women in the suburbs because of the image she represents. In prayer, we should all be positive, we have to look the one who determines all things. We should not have to be concern about "exhaling or blowing", but accepting God's will. (It also doesn't hurt if God raises $150 million dollars for you in one month. That's an endorsement!).

I agree with Mr. Sparks about the statement and "the man" Colin Powell, and as he so eloquently put it Gov Palin is NOT READY to be a president of the United States. She simply made a fool of herself on Saturday Night Live, who cares if she has rythmn or not, the country is not concerned about her moves. I agree with Suff Bishop, I am certainly "Waiting to Exhale", and I still have no doubt that Barack Obama is our next president of the United States. This is a prime time for the transfer of the wealth to the righteous, who knows how God works, however it is, it always looks backward to the human being, but spiritually speaking he is bringing about a great change which goes far beyond what either candidate would be speaking about. God's change, changes all things, including those who will be ruling over his people. This is our epic moment to declare who will reign as President of the United States, and on that I declare and decree that Barack Obama is our next president, it is so, In Jesus Name.

I find that while I can't say I'm inhaling right now, it's not because I'm holding my breath It's because I can't breathe. <br><br>I'm a twenty year old college student, and my parents are in awe of me. So much of the hardships they endured throughout their youth have yet to cross my path. I'm in an historically black sorority, yet in high school the majority of my friends were white. I may have been looked at the wrong way, or given a second glance, and I will never know what my high school teachers or my college professors or my summer job managers really thought of me, but in my 20 years on this wonderful planet, I have yet to hear the "n-word" in reference to myself. I am part of a new generation, preparing to take the world by storm: to memorialize the struggles of the past, but not let them taint our dreams of the future, to recognize the strengths of our differences as human beings, to earn my keep and god willing make the places I live and the people I meet a little better than where I found them. <br><br>I can't breathe because the ideals I hold so close to my heart, the change that I wish to see, the progress Black America has made, the revolution of our political structure, the unification of not just Black America, but AMERICA under a visionary and representative leader are all pressing down on my chest, a weight so wonderful that I'm hoping it will stay there for all of time. <br><br>I am empowered. I am amazed. I am thrilled. I am alive. And I am anxiously waiting for November the 4th. Not so that I can exhale. But so I can see what new weights of change will take my breathe away.

Courtney, you certainly represent a new generation and I'm glad you've not had to personally experience the challenges for most African-Americans. I can only pray that you never will. Bishop, I was not going to weigh in on this one, but my, my, my, Courtney has stirred me expection until I am salivating with great anticipation with the same type of hope. Kudos to her parents and all those who have downloaded into this upcoming and promising somebody! I too am holding my breath, praying for the grandmother of Senator Obama, praying right now for Florida and all the precincts there. This morning it showed long lines where people waited for 3 hours and more because voting machines were either down or there was only one machine at the site. I rebuke and bind that spirit! While holding my breath, waiting to exhale, I am also trying to get my funds together and make preparations to get to Washington come January 21, 2009. I need to be there for the historical event.

Courtney I enjoyed reading your blog I am amazed yet happy that you have never experienced the negativity as an African-American, it certainly tells the time that you are living in. I can identify with you in a sense. I have a grandson in Law School and he has been educated in the basically white school system of our city, he has gone through undergrad with those same white friends he hung out with in high school, some from elementary up, he roomed with them all through undergrad school, has remained close friends with them until this day. I have never heard once from his mouth that he has experienced any discrimination toward him. He spent the night at those close friends homes and likewise they spent nights at his home. When they come home on break they travel together. So I understand what you are saying and I also pray that you will never have to experience those negative situations that African Americans have to go through and have gone through. This is one reason I am so against Sarah Palin and John McCain, they are trying to sow that same seed that we have worked at uprooting for years. Kee your entusiasm and your tenacity in becoming that one who can help change the politcal structure and bring America to the Unification that you speak of. I am sure that is the dream Barack Obama has also even though he has experieced much of what you haven't. I pray his children will grow to be able to speak as you and what I haven't heard from my grandson to acutally say, the unification of a nation.

I like the comments by Courtney. It does exhibit a new generation fell and excitment that I think America, especially Black America, needs and welcomes. Although we are close in age, myself being a 22 so to be 23 year old Black male, I cannot claim the same testimony, yet I find myself desirous of claiming that dream for the present and future generations. <br>I have experienced more, of what I believe to be, racial discrimination than I would like to admit. I have read enough books and seen enough documentaries to know that this is an epoch moment in time considering all that Black Americans have experienced throughout history. Although this has been my experience I encourage Courtney, and all the other ones out there, to stay the way you are and continue to grow! Please spread what ever it is that you have been eating or drinking around so that everyone in our country, young and old, can partake in the same feeling and exhilaration that you have! I am an optimistic person but I know in my heart that as Bishop Norman Wagner says, "This will be determined by the saints", so I am doing as Paul tells me to watch and pray. <br>In conclusion, I do want to say that for this generation to truly be successful in all its endeavors we must find way to work with those who have gone before us, our elders, while remaining young and working with the youth. There can no longer be a divide. Moses raised up Joshua but who did Joshua raise up? We need now more than ever the wisdom of the past generations combined the youth, vigor, and vitality of the present. Please remain prayerful for the next two weeks and beyond. For it will take more prayer to keep Sen. Obama as President than it did to get him, and his family, there.

Brandon i agree with you, instead of a bridge or age gap, they should be merging as a corporation merges and the youth carry out the wisdom and knowledge of the aged to build upon the platform already prepared instead of trying to build new platforms. Also, How about Sara Palin stating that she is more experienced than Barack Obama. For someone who doesn't know the role and job description of the Vice President, you couldnt prove it by me. A third grader asked her and I betcha, he knew more than she did. With her stating the same thing twice at two different occasions, I think she is down right stupid as the old folks would say.It is so sad and to think that McCain chose this stupidity to step up to the office of presidency in case something happens to the oldest beside Reagan in running for the most pressurized office in the world. This has nothing to do with color, this has everything to do with brains, intelligence, wisdom, understanding and knowledge, which she is lacking in all of the above. PLeeeese give me a break.

We are indeed waiting to exhale or blow, logic says that hands down Obama is the better candidate. Better in that the Bush / McCain policies have led our country to the point where we are today, the housing market may be beyond repair for the foreseable future. The financial climate is the worse in my 47 years, a senseless war in Iraq that's costing billions per month with no end in sight. I like many have sought equality for all regardless of race, color or creed, I always thought that for this to occur that the quality of life for blacks would have to be elevated, this administration has proven to do the unthinkable. They are bringing us closer to equality, they are doing so by lowering the quality of life for the masses, (I'm sure that's not what King meant). I find it ironic that when Five Star General Colin Powell endorsed Obama that the race question had to be asked, I'm perplexed as to why the same question was not asked of the multiple Five Star Generals endorsing McCain??? Be as it may I too am waiting to exhale, my sincere prayers and desires are that reasonable thinking people will make the right decision on 11/3.

Obviously Carlton it did hurt deep to Mccain that General Powell endorsed Barack Obama, however, he made it clear to the nation that five other's endorced him and oh well. What perplexes me is when we endorse someone black it has to be a color issue, but when when a white man endorses a white man there is nothing said about racism, or when we endorse a white man, something is wrong with that picture. That kind of mentality is to keep us bound in the confines of our minds that they want us to be incarcerated with, not to be able to discern nor think for ourselves. It also takes us back to the old mentality of crabs in a barrell.

It is not time to exhale. It is time to vote and encourage our friends and fellow citizens to vote. I would like to share this article with you- Give Change a Chance<br><br><br><br>While the presidential candidates are trying to win voters confidence and ultimately to obtain their vote by telling us that their ideals and philosophies are the ones we should subscribe to in this election, the one thing we do know is that this is a very interesting presidential race. There are persons in each major party that reflect each one of us in America. Barack Obama, an African American, is the Democratic Nominee and John McCain, a White American war hero, is the Republican Nominee. Mr. Obama has for his running mate, a white American male, and Mr. McCain has a white American female for his running mate. Both parties are anointed with individuals that will make history in America if they win the election. <br><br>This has been the most exciting presidential race in my lifetime. I am now 51 years old and I have been voting since 1981. As a black American male I longed for the day when the progressive spirit of the Constitution would touch the hearts of the majority of Americans to elect a Black American as President of the United States. <br><br>This race is not about John McCain or Sara Palins’ character or experience while making a bid to the White House. I like both of them deeply, but this is about electing the first Black African American as the next President of the United States. Most Black Americans are planning on voting for Mr. Obama, but too many of us are fixated on belittling the other candidates when we should be strategizing to win the votes of other ethnic groups. <br><br>The United States has witnessed many historical moments that will be celebrated perpetually. Starting with ‘no taxation without representation”, the Boston Tea Party, the Declaration of Independence, the final victory over the British, the Civil War that saved the Union, The Emancipation Proclamation, the defeat of the separate but equal doctrine, the right for women to vote, the victory in World War II, the passage of the Civil Rights laws, the appointment of the first black Joint Chief of Staff, the first black female Secretary of State and last the first Black Democratic Nominee for President. <br><br>We have progressed from the start of enslaving the Black African in 1619, to electing the descendant of the same to become the very leader of the country that enslaved them. The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal, but the White Majority that had the Black Africans in slavery did not honor that very doctrine. On August 28, 2008 the Majority honored the statement, “All men are created equal,” by nominating Barack Obama as America’s potential leader. <br><br>This is another proud moment for me as a Black American whose ancestors were slaves. This is also a proud and encouraging time for all Black Americans to see our fellow white citizen’s progress to elect a Black American as president. It is impossible for the blacks in America to elect Mr Obama as President of the United States of America without the votes of other ethnic groups. The entire population of African Americans is estimated at 37 million. Approximately 24 millions are voting age, and possibly 10 million of these will vote. As a result of this election it is anticipated that one million more blacks will register to vote. Even if 15 million black Americans vote for him, he will need the votes of the whites in America to cast their votes for him. According to the 2000 Census Bureau there are150 million white Americans that are of voting age. That equates to more than seven times the number of black voters and even larger for other groups. <br><br>Many voters, especially the so called conservative white voters, are afraid that Mr Obama doesn’t have enough experience to lead this country. Many fear that he is on the far left and are afraid that he will have a negative affect on this country. There has never been a candidate that was a president prior to being voted in as president. Not one of the current candidates has experience of being president of this country. So, the question isn’t a matter of experience, it is a matter of intellectual ability and stamina to lead this country, and adjusting while gaining experience as the President. Every person that came before Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain had to do the same thing. Most were successful but some failed. I don’t think that Mr. Obama will fail; Give change a chance. <br><br>America has a balance of power to make sure that a President doesn’t destroy our country. Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain are limited in what they can do in the White House except for their power as Commander in Chief. That power also needs approval. <br><br>Our Country is in a mess at this present moment and Mr Obama is not the President. His ideals and philosophies have been chanted back to him by millions of American White voters. They have shouted give us change. There are two philosophies that we can take from this. The first is to change the direction the country is headed, and the second is to change our mind set about the ability of an intelligent minority leading this country. Even black Americans need to change their mind set by removing the fear of ‘what if.’ If we look back at all of our Presidents starting with the second one, we do see that not one of them was perfect. As great as this has been and still is, there have always been economical, political, social and religious problems under the leadership of the American White males. America has a man in the Democratic Party that is equally capable of running or ruining this country as our former presidents did. Give change a chance. <br><br>Finally, I hope that every Black African American can stand with me with honest and sincere heartfelt thanks to all the White voters that have voted for Mr Obama. Thank you for giving change a chance. It is because of the number of your votes that America is moving in the direction of honoring the phrase, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” <br>This is the spirit of progress that this country is built on. Give Change a chance, you will be happy you did or no more disappointed than you have been. Thanks -F.R. <br><br>

I sent this email to Rush Limbaugh: Rush, are you on those pain pills again? I just finished listening to you between 1:15-2:00 PM. You were playing cuts from what Obama said in 2005? I am a registered republican. I am also a Black American. As you know most Black Americans are Democrats. I decided since slavery was over, I wasn’t going to allow any American to tell me what political party to join. However, I don’t hate the other groups; thereby hating the persons that belong to those groups. <br><br>My name is +++++. Here is my disagreement with you. You have been using what Obama said to poison the mind of the people. If you would write down what he said and write down what you said side by side, you will obviously see that the rhetoric you are using is nothing more than a Red Herring. You and other republicans are taking, “spreading the wealth,” out of context. We all know that America will not become a socialist country. With all of her many changes from our fine first president until now, we are progressing. The Great Depression or this recent Economical Crisis will not sink America. It's going down, early voting has begun and the battle is in progress. The media continues to pump fear into the McCain's camp. Yet God is waving his hand and it will be decided by God. Do your part vote and encourage everyone who is eligible to vote.

Bish, thanks. I have been very busy at the job. I have also been writing and telling others to vote for Obama in this election. This is a moment that we as a Black ethnic group should not let slip away from us. I am extremely proud of this moment and the Whites voters. I am proud many Black Americans like C Powers that have crossed the party line for such a time as this. It is okay for us to do this, as the Bible declares, we are not servants to any man. I can make up my own mine. I will be dialoguing later. God bless.

Gittysbug i have been missing you, normally we are at odds, but I take my hat off to you for that letter to Rush Limbaugh because he is certainly trying to be heard by all of American. I knew you had to be Republican for us to be at odds from the start, but I believe we did agree on some things and this is another time I agree with you. It is not about party this time around, it is about what is right for American at this time and he just happens to be the first educated undoubtedly intelligent African American that was in the wings for such a time as this. God knows what to do to set time. He is the only one that can set time and he I believe has ordained this to be.

Love you Court!! (my Soror from Miami up top)....... In comment to the actual blog... my colleagues and I were recently talking about the Presidential election, as with many other college students, and we were discussing "what if" situations about the outcome of this current election. We are so use to having a white president that I think the bigger riot is going come from other races. Yes, the black population would be upset but I think other races and ethnicities will be more impacted. No matter how often people sweep topics under the carpet or brush by different issues, I do not think America is ready to see a black man running our country....but, ready or not.... here he comes! I look forward to exhaling a loud scream on Dec. 4th, 2008 when Barack Obama is announced as the next President of the United States of America

I think all of America is holding their breath, even those who are not planning to vote for Obama. The nation alone is just waiting for change, for the end of the Bush Administration. The past 8 years have been bad for just about everyone and we are so close to that change that everyone is waiting in anticipation. As for the effects of Obama not getting into office, there just maybe riots. However, at this point it's so close according to polls that the election is really a toss up. Even if he doesn't win ( which I pray he does) all of us are experiencing history. My little cousins were watching the television the other day and seeing Sen. Obama on TV was not a big deal to them because they are only 4 and 5 but to all of those who can grasp this concept, we have an African American man running for President a milestone in our history that we will forever remember. So even if he doesn't win I will still be able to exhale very very slowly though.

Jacquie thanks. I appreciate dialoguing with my brothers and sisters even while agreeing and disagreeing with them. The tone of Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh messages are actually inciting people that hate Moslems and Blacks to get rid of Obama any way they can. They may not realize what they are doing, but this is exactly what they are feeding people. It is the hope of 99% of Black Americans that descended from the ancestry of slaves that Mr. Obama is elected President of the United States of America. What a day of rejoicing that will be. It will be like the April – June of 1865.

I find the infomationon in your blog very timely, intrigueing and useful.<br>i hope to be at the next conference, Oh by the way Dr Brady you just blew us out of the water, everybody was so blessed in the conference in Hattiesburg,MS - we can't hardly wait for the 2009 Mobile,AL conf.<br>As for President-Elect, I wish that my wife and i could be at the first Historic African-American Inauguration, It will be audacious and a superb<br>occasion for the USA and the entire world, then i can Exhale. 11/26/08
